Dear Suzanne,

I recently purchased a brand-new 2022 Ford Bronco Sport, and I’m quickly discovering that it’s not the dream vehicle I had hoped for. Right from the start, I noticed that the fog lamp was missing. I brought this up with the Ford dealership, and they claimed it was a manufacturing oversight. They offered me $500 in compensation, which I later found out was far below what I should have received.

STRANGE NOISE

As I continued to drive my new Bronco, I encountered a series of problems. First, there was a strange noise that took two visits to the dealership to fix. Then, my car’s central lock system malfunctioned, causing the alarm to go off nonstop. Additionally, something in the door panel came loose, requiring yet another visit to the dealership.

FUEL INJECTOR SCARE

The real scare, however, came when I received a recall letter. The letter stated that the vehicle’s fuel injector might crack, causing fuel to accumulate on the engine and potentially leading to a fire. Ford informed me that the replacement part was not immediately available, and I would have to wait a month for it.

This has left me feeling extremely worried and unsafe in my own car. I believe I have a lemon on my hands and would like to pursue my options under lemon law. Can you provide some advice on what I should do next?

I’m sorry to hear about your troubling experience with your 2022 Ford Bronco Sport. It’s evident that your vehicle has numerous issues, and considering it’s only a few months old, this is a valid concern. The good news is that lemon law exists to protect consumers like yourself who have purchased defective vehicles.

REPAIR REQUIREMENTS

To qualify for lemon law, you typically must have taken your vehicle in for repair at least two times for the same issue or three times for different issues while under warranty. Given the problems you’ve encountered, it seems you qualify.

Lemon law outcomes typically include three options: vehicle replacement, Lemon Law buyback, or cash and keep. Vehicle replacement is not recommended, as you might end up with another lemon. The two preferable options are buyback and cash and keep.

POSSIBLE SETTLEMENT OUTCOMES

With a buyback, the manufacturer repurchases your vehicle, refunding your down payment, monthly installments, and other payments, including accrued interest. The cash and keep option allows you to retain your vehicle while receiving cash compensation from the manufacturer. Compensation amounts vary based on the severity of the issues, but can range from $5,000 to $25,000. Your warranty remains intact, and you won’t need to label the vehicle as a lemon if you decide to sell it later.

Lemon law cases in California can take anywhere from 3 to 7 months, depending on the manufacturer’s cooperation. Legal fees for lemon law cases are typically paid by the manufacturer, so you don’t need to worry about those costs.

To move forward with your case, provide your attorney with all relevant documentation, such as repair orders and invoices. If you encounter more problems with your vehicle during the case, continue to bring it in for repairs and obtain repair orders for each visit.
