BMW’s Fire Hazard Recall: 721,000 Vehicles Affected—Is Yours Safe?

In a significant safety alert, BMW is recalling 720,796 vehicles from its 2012-2018 line-up due to a potentially hazardous defect in the water pump assembly. This recall specifically affects popular models such as the X1, X3, X4, and X5.

Water Pump Defect Pose Potential Fire Risk

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), an insufficiently sealed electrical connector on the water pump installed on affected models could be exposed to water, causing it to short circuit and increasing the risk of a fire.

According to BMW, liquid from the pump can potentially seep into the electrical plug connector over time because of the sealing issue:

“Blowby-liquid from the positive crankcase ventilation system may collect on the intake air hose. If this occurs, then this liquid could drip onto the plug connector. Over time, this could lead to fluid ingress into the plug and the possibility of a short circuit.”

The water pump in these vehicles is manufactured by Germany-based Pierburg Pump Technology GmbH.

If necessary, these components will be replaced, and a protective shield will be installed to prevent future issues.

Here’s BMW’s technical description of the remedy:

“The water pump, and the plug connector, will be inspected and, if necessary, replaced, and a shield will be installed to divert any fluid that might drop down onto the pump from the positive crankcase ventilation system’s intake air house.”

All repairs will be conducted free of charge, with the work expected to commence following the dispatch of notification letters on October 4, 2024.
