2021 Chevy Silverado Stuck in the Slow Lane

DEAR SUZANNE

Feels Like The Whole Truck Is Going to Fall Apart Around Me

Dear Suzanne,

I wish I had done more research before I bought my 2021 Chevy Silverado. Since then, all I’ve been hearing about (and experiencing) are the problems with them, especially the transmission.

Three months ago, I bought a used 2021 Chevrolet Silverado with just 20,000 miles on it. 4,000 miles later, and it’s nothing but problems. First, I took it into a Chevy dealership last month because the check engine light kept clicking on and off over and over again. They told me it was a problem with the GPS and that I had to take it back to the dealership where I purchased it, so their technicians could remove it. So I did that. Then, a week later, it’s the EST system control light that’s blinking. Plus, the transmission has started making grinding noises whenever it shifts.  I can’t even go above 40 mph without it feeling like the whole truck is going to fall apart around me.

I only drove 4000 miles since I bought the truck, and problems just seem to be cropping up everywhere. I’m really concerned the truck isn’t safe to drive and based on everything I read, I think it should count as a lemon. Am I right about that? What do I need to do to get this straightened away?

Get Those Required Repairs Done

Dear Going Slow,

Unfortunately, everything you’ve described is common with defective Silverados. While that might not make you feel better, it might help to know that you do seem to have a potential lemon case on your hands.

I say potential because, based on what you told me, you may still need more repairs. But luckily, you caught on to your Silverado’s problems early, so you have lots of wiggle room in your manufacturer’s warranty to take care of them.

For reference (and for our new readers), lemon law requires that you allow the manufacturer the opportunity to address and fix any issues or defects. This means that in order to qualify for used car lemon law, you must have the vehicle repaired at least two times for a singular issue or three times for multiple issues, while still within the manufacturer’s warranty period.

Currently, you have at least one of these required visits, but for a solid case, you’ll want more. Since you are experiencing both electrical and mechanical issues, it would be best to schedule separate visits for each problem so that the technician can focus on the specific issue. This will also help build up your potential lemon case. Continue booking appointments until you have enough repair orders to meet the requirements. This is very important; make sure you get a copy of your repair paperwork every visit – this is the evidence that your case will be built on.

Once you have your documentation in order, your next step will be to take advantage of our free lemon law service. Having a skilled lemon law attorney at your side will drastically improve your chances of success, and because California is such a consumer friendly state, the service is free to vehicle owners. That’s right. It’s the manufacturer’s responsibility to pay for any fees or costs incurred – not you!

Don’t get overwhelmed, and don’t take it slow. The sooner you make those appointments, the better. Here’s to taking your first step back into the fast lane.
